Variety Of Publications
Operated By Students

By Brian Siegel
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

In addition to The Cavalier
Daily, many activities are open to
first-year men, including the University
Union and other student
publications.

The University Union, founded
in 1932, is a student-run organization
which sponsors a broad
range of programs and activities for
the students, ranging from concerts
dances and to the annual
Blood Drive and the Fine Arts
Contest.

The Union sponsors the Artist
Series, which brings to the University
prominent performers in music
and drama, and holds exhibits in
Newcomb Hall.

Yearbook

The Union also sponsors trips
for University students and Faculty
during academic vacations. Its
offices are on the fourth floor of
Newcomb Hall.

Corks & Curls, the University's
yearbook, has offered
and written account of student life
each year since 1888. Large
sections are devoted to sports, life
at the University, fraternities and
other organizations. Offices for the
yearbook are on the fifth floor of
Newcomb Hall.

Picture Essay

The Virginia Spectator, recently
known as the University of Virginia
Magazine, is published five times
during the school year. The magazine
this year has revived its original
name which was changed after the
magazine was banned in the early
1800's. The Virginia Spectator
carries stories, poems, and essays
written by students, and occasional
picture essays.

Displays

The Virginia Weekly is a biweekly
news magazine of opinion
written by students and faculty at
the University. Its offices are
located in the St. Thomas Church.

The University Union and the
publications, including The Cavalier
Daily, are open to all first-year men
who are interested in participating
in University activities, and will
have displays and sign-up sheets at
activities night.
